The Curriculum
Learning how events and processes relate, leads to an understanding of our place,
ecological stewardship and responsibility. Properly taught, knowledge is integrated
into systems where it can be constructed into useful frameworks by which to
understand and navigate the world.
Students will master factual knowledge, conceptual knowledge, procedural
knowledge and metacognitive knowledge within an experience-based,
interdisciplinary curriculum. At individual pacing, the student will experience
academic progress in the following disciplines:
- Language Arts –Literacy is mastered
through reading and writing, drama, peer and
community presentations within the context of
all subjects.
- Global Studies –The understanding of our
world's people and land will be presented in a way that fosters a sense of
safety, tolerance, respect and eventually love for the diversity of experience
and expression. Students will understand the effects of economic, geographic
and political interactions that have taken place throughout world history.
- Business, Finances and Math- Students will run a retail store that sells student
made, earth-friendly products. Students will study Algebra I & II, Geometry
and Statistics.
- The Arts-Drama, music, visual arts and dance are an integral part of student
learning across the curriculum. Specialist teachers in the arts work with
students during and after school.
- Health and Well Being—Tai chi, sports and yoga facilitate physical expression
and development. Health classes help students understand nutrition,
physiological balance and the effect of toxins in the body. Professional
counseling, relaxation and mediation techniques are available.
- The necessary, but often over looked, quiet time is also part of the curriculum.
- By reflecting on the things that attract us in nature, we learn about ourselves.
- Ecology, Conservation and Green Building --Students will research and
participate in the practices of green building, including their own classrooms
and shelters. The school will work to become a center for information on
ecologically friendly living.
- Outreach--Community service projects and community affiliations are chosen
and developed by students themselves.
The Teachers
About Us
“The balance between manual and intellectual work is important to the
development of the adolescent. Therefore the work on the land is an
introduction both to nature and civilization and gives a limitless field for scientific
and historic studies." Maria Montessori
Responding to a more enlightened view of learning, the school offers a greater
appreciation of intuitive and non linear ways of knowing.
We use a natural process of teaching which is “to draw forth” the imagination,
wonder, and wisdom of the child into the process of learning.
We have prepared a woods and an urban
learning environment that meets the needs of the
teenager for real work and community
connection. It is a safe place where they can
learn about themselves, feel and act on their own
creative drive and gain tools to transition from
dependence to independence.
- Science-A great way to learn about physical science,
biology, chemistry, and space is to be out in the field,
sensing and observing, creating experiments,
collecting data, and articulating findings.
